MUSEUM OF THE CITY OF NEW YORK

This historic hotel was home to one of the most well-known gay bathhouses in New York City in the 1970s. The Continental Baths, located in the basement of the Ansonia Hotel, claimed to be able to serve 1,000 men, 24 hours a day with private rooms, a disco, and a cabaret. Future stars like Bette Midler, Barry Manilow, and Patti LaBelle, performed at the bathhouse as well as established musicians like Cab Calloway, Lesley Gore, and even the Andrews Sisters. More on the hotel: bit.ly/3spDDe8

A towel from the Continental Baths is featured in “New York at Its Core.” This section of our permanent exhibition explores the ways in which LGBTQ+ life in New York became far more open and visible following the Stonewall Uprising of 1969.

I don't know if people know about the Daytonian in Manhattan blog, but it's an incredible resource for the history of , particularly residential architecture. It's quaintly still hosted on , meticulously researched, and entertainingly written by Tom Miller. Here's an excerpt from the latest post about a . The whole sordid story is well worth reading.

In honor of the late Irene Cara we watched Fame last night. I remember the legacy of this film, and growing up in 80's NYC. The film is actually very dark, the kids go through hell, and no adults are really there to help them. Things haven't changed that much. Photo: young Irene Cara sitting on a car circa 1980 in dance attire. RIP Irene.

My feeble try at an effective

I stare at the night sky in awe, I stare at my garden in awe, I try to create music that reflects my awe of all that is around us. Fatherhood at 45 years old has introduced me to my best pal and muse (he’s 9, I’m sorry, 9-and-a-half now), and has me more in love with his mom, my wife of a quarter-century, than ever.
