Hey NYC folks, I'm playing with Dark Streets today, doing the music of The Pogues and more. It's an end-of-aummer party at Mama Tried in Sunset Park, Brooklyn. If the weather holds out we'll play outside and kids will be welcome. If it rains we'll move it inside the bar for the grownups only. Free show either way! 4 to 7pm.
Tons of great free outdoor music happening in NYC today:
* 1pm Washington Square Park Folk Festival
* 2pm Sun Ra Arkestra at Union Pool
* 3pm Charlie Parker Jazz Festival in Tompkins Square Park
* 4pm Sloppy Heads record release party at Mama Tried
* 5pm - Rockaway Beach Surf Music Festival at Beach 97th Street
Wow!
Almost forgot about to mention, I'm playing with the spectacular Time Machine Appetizer band tonight! Groovy surf rock and soul jazz instrumentals. Free show at An Beal Bocht in the Riverdale neighborhood of The Bronx. Two sets from 8 to 10. Stop by if you're in the neighborhood!

I'm playing tonight with Dark Streets, NYC's number one (and only) Pogues cover band! 8 to 11pm at the 11th Street Bar in the East Village. Free show!
I'm playing at Young Ethel's in Park Slope TONIGHT with The Wild Koba! First gig in a decade for this group that plays heavy prog-rock originals and more. And we're celebrating both the birthday and successful recovery from cancer (!!!) of bandleader @wildkoba. Free show - NYC folks, come on out!

Amazing set tonight by Brooklyn Raga Massive, playing the music of the Mahavishnu Orchestra at Culture Lab in Long Island City. My old friend and bandmate Dan Asher locked it DOWN on bass.

I'm out at Rockwood for a reunion of Sol Patch, a great funk band with some old friends of mine who used to play around Binghamton when we were all students there in the '90s. First time seeing these guys in 26 years! #funk #Binghamton #PreserveRockwood #NYCMusic

Yet another great NYC music venue is in danger of closing. I have been hearing rumors about problems at Rockwood Music Hall for a while, and now they're confirming that the rumors are true. A gofundme has been launched and a series of benefit shows is planned to try to save the club.
Oh yeah, I'm playing some rock 'n' roll in Queens tonight! Local 76 live at the Wild Goose Pub in Woodside, Queens. Great original '70s style hard rock from a powerhouse band. Free show, 9pm.
I'm playing drums with NYC's #1 Pogues cover band tonight! (Also the only Pogues cover band, but whatever ...) 8pm at Arlene's Grocery, followed by a great Police tribute called NY's Finest.
Oh yeah, I'm playing some drums in Brooklyn today! Two big sets of soul jazz, funk and blues from Alistair Sim and friends. 4 to 7pm at The Gate in Park Slope. Free outdoors show! South Brooklyn people, roll through!

I'm playing with Touque tonight! 7 to 10pm at Stitch Blues Bar on W. 37th Street in NYC. First gig with these guys in a while ... If you're in NYC come catch some weird funky soul jazz.
I'm back on stage with Dark Streets tonight, playing the music of the Pogues. 9pm upstairs at Bowery Electric in the East Village.

Great show at the Blue Note tonight from Antonio Sanchez & Bad Hombre, performing music from their latest album, including new songs by Becca Stevens, Ana Tijoux and ... Trent Reznor? Rippin' multi-genre fusion from an international band. Drumming fireworks from Sanchez (as you would expect), Alexa sung and rapped in English and Spanish with some great scatting, keyboard wizard BIGYUKI drew from Sun Ra and Cecil Taylor, and bassist Rex Sadler laid down a greasy groove.
Next was Jason Prover's Sneak Thievery Orchestra at the Rum House. I have played with Jason many times over the last decade and he keeps getting better and better. He has a beautiful sound on the trumpet and plays the hell out of hot jazz and ballads.
This was my first time setting foot in the Rum House since my last gig there in February 2020. Was happy to see our old pal Troy was still behind the bar. The old vibe was intact. It was good to be back.
Did a jazz doubleheader in midtown NYC tonight. First up: Jeff 'Tain' Watts at Dizzy's Club. His quintet came roaring out of the gates with Monk's Brilliant Corners and then tried out a bunch of new original compositions by Tain. Set included tributes to Wayne Shorter and Ellis Marsalis, and an extended suite inspired by George Floyd. Lots of odd meters and fireworks from the leader. Band included Don Byron, Paul Bollenbeck and James Francies (who was a stone killer on piano).
Just noticed that Hermeto Pascoal is playing in Brooklyn in May! He's 86 years old so there's no way I'm going to miss this one.

I am still reeling from the performances of The Messthetics (with two Fugazi members) and the James Brandon Lewis Trio at LPR tonight. Two great flavors of heady improv that go great together. My takeaways:
1) James Brandon Lewis is incredible
2) The Messthetics are incredible
3) JBL + Messthetics = incredible squared
4) Anthony Pirog might be the best guitarist I have ever seen
Tonight was the last night of the tour. If they ever do it again, DO NOT MISS IT.
I'm back on drums with Dark Streets for more Pogues music tonight. We're playing a St. Paddy's Day party at Mama Tried in Sunset Park, Brooklyn. Free show at 8pm. 787 3rd Avenue at 27th Street underneath the BQE.
