Alice starts a new room called #room:server.foo on her hobby homeserver.
Bob joins with his account, @bob:otherserver.bla, and adds a local address, which Alice publishes.
A week later, Alice decides she can't be bothered with server.foo and shuts it down.
She rejoins the room with her new matrix account using #nzoss:otherserver.bla.
The experiences of joining and using the room is just the same as if server.foo was still alive, and she'd used #room:server.foo.
Does that make sense?

Periodic reminder that this #NZOSS #Maastodon instance (along with a lot of other #FOSS services - https://nzoss.nz/services) are available to the Aotearoa NZ community for active use and demonstration purposes - all onshore, here in Aotearoa - thanks to the generous sponsored cloud service provided by CatalystCloud.nz. Many thanks for your many years of rock solid, cutting edge tech services and support!
Eugh. Forgot that being unemployed loses me access to MS Office.
#NZOSS peops... Is there still two camps fighting it out between Open Office & Libre Office? Or has one of them stretched into the lead?
TBH, I'm gonna be really looking for something that can handle more complex Word docs, or PDFs, without playing absolute havoc with the formatting.
@lightweight the call for the #nzgovernment by #nzoss to start a #mastodon server is interesting. Any precedents? BTW the #nzoss server needs more details on the about page, who’s welcome to open an account, commitment of service (for example x months grace on closing down etc) #
