#Matrix is a federation protocol, like the ActivityPub standard that connects the fediverse. Existing matrix apps can be used for E2EE chats, but for now they're used mainly for federated chat rooms, both public and private.

There's an Aotearoa/ NX Community/Space (like a Discord "server") hosted by some of the same folks from the mastodon.nz team. It includes a bunch of open invite rooms, including NZ Technology Discussion:
