Opened a Te Mata Awatea 2010 tonight which is drinking beautifully. It's 13 years old. It wouldn't have been anywhere near as nice had I opened it in 2011... The cork broke though, which is another whole conversation.

Does anyone have any idea when the concept of cellaring came about? The idea that we should keep this wine for e.g. five years before we drink it, because it will be so much better if we wait?
We've been cellaring wines for centuries but when was the first time we decided that this year's wines are not yet ready to drink? That we should wait a number of years before we drink it?
Had a lovely dinner at Onslow last night. I had:
- Oscietra Caviar & Onslow Fried Chicken
- Heirloom Tomato Salad Cabernet Sauvignon Dressing, Basil, Sourdough
- Cambridge Duck Breast Mushroom Marmalade, Preserved Cherry, Radicchio
- shared sides incl. Brussels Sprout Gratin Parmesan, Spinach Cream.
And a couple of excellent wines:
Huntress Martinborough Pinot Noir 2020
Giant Steps Yarra Valley Chardonnay 2021

Got an opportunity to help out with vineyard sampling today which I don't normally do anymore. It was a nice day for fieldwork. Lots of bees in the vineyard today. #Vintage2023 #NZWine #wine #WineScience #vineyard

My thoughts go out to all those in New Zealand who were affected by the recent cyclones, including those in the wine industry. I had heard things were bad, but what this article reports is shocking!

Hubs is auditing our wine …collection (not fancy enough for a cellar). Apparently I keep buying and he wonders if I don’t like what we have stored, 😳😂 48 bottles (not including the quaffing wines in the fridge). He’s now merrily sorting them in order of what should be enjoyed first so they don’t end up past it (not all are ‘cellaring’ types) and I’m not buying any more for a while,…maybe! #nzwine #wine

Unfashionable as it is to like Merlot these days when we're all swimming in mediocre Pinot Noir, here's the extremely scrumptious Saint Clair 2019 Rapaura Reserve Merlot, one of the few in NZ not from Waiheke Island or the Hawke's Bay. Grab it while there's some left, recommend AAAAA++++ would smash again. Great with food, beef and lamb, or whatever you fancy really...

Sitting in the evening summer sunshine drinking the Dancing Petrel Arneis we bought while on holiday in the Far North of #NZ last summer. It was a miserable day as there was a cyclone-sound familiar?!- with 100% humidity but 27c, what to do? We could see the vineyard from the Bach, so called and arranged to do a #wine tasting. We had the most fabulous afternoon chatting with the owner and tasting wines, it was great! #memories #nzwine
