@pgavin I read on the Wikipedia page for the fire that "An additional problem was the predominance of cedar shake (rough shingle) roofs."

I also like to research the history of the Redwood forest in the East Bay hills. One of the distressing things I learned is that much of the most profitable output from the early harvesting of the very biggest redwoods was to produce shingles.

Wooden structures burned so many times in SF in the earlier years, after the Gold Rush began.

I live in a wooded, hillside neighborhood in the #OaklandHills and this is all very, very near to me. My house is made of wood. We have > 100 years of fuel built up. I feel like one of the Three Little Pigs. :-)

I transcribed this 1920s article from the #OaklandTribune, part of a really cool series called Ye Olden Oakland Days, describing the history of Lincoln avenue, its residents, the Golden Gate and its naming by John C. #Fremont, and a lot of other interesting information. This would be interesting to #SanFrancisco people.
