Nice #Oaklandside article on the state of the repair business in #Oakland. So much is considered disposable today, but I'm old enough to remember when people still fixed things like toasters.

For me it's not about the relative cost, but the resources that go into repair vs. replace.

Police only list speed as a cause of death if the speed is more than x mph above posted speed limit, where #OPD do not reveal the value of x
Car hitting pedestrian at 35-40mph in a pedestrian district?
Speed is not a factor since posted speed limit is 30mph.

Mayor Thao announces leadership team

Some encouraging signs in the team Sheng Thao is putting together. Leigh Hanson comes from Glide and it seems lots of other useful experience.
Steven Falk was Oakland's administrator for a minute in 2020, but is best known for his long tenure as administrator in Lafayette and especially for quitting the job because the city wouldn't address housing needs! https://gspp.berkeley.edu/research-and-impact/faculty/steven-falk
