The legend goes that he dipped himself into the ocean to accomplish this and at some point down the line when there was such a thing as gestation, came to be the one forming beings in the egg or womb. They've looked for the female Obatala. There isn't one, though in the function of mothering he becomes somewhat she-ish as Yembo.
