The media is supposed to be objective, not neutral or centrist.

Objective: “They sky is blue. This is both the consensus of relevant scientists and something anyone can see for themselves by looking out the window. In fact, I just looked right now, and it was blue. Go look if you’re skeptical.”

Neutrality is: “Some people say that the sky is blue, others say that it’s on fire, and still others say it’s satanic. This reporter remains dutifully neutral and refuses to look out the window. Instead, we’ll simply say that the condition of the sky is controversial and disputed.”

Centrism is: “The far left says the sky is burning due to global warming. The far right says the sky is satanic due to gays and transsexuals. In the interest of centrism, we conclude that the sky is burning with satanic fires. We’re going to ignore the fact that the sky is blue.”

I managed to miss The View from Somewhere when it was media-current a few years back. Until this week, could not have told you who Lewis Wallace is if asked. Now catching up a bit — and appreciating.

A quotation from Hinshelwood, Cyril:

«««««
A common fallacy in much of the adverse criticism to which science is subjected today is that it claims certainty, infallibility and complete emotional objectivity. It would be more nearly true to say that it is based upon wonder, adventure and hope.

'As the most fundamental critique of white male “objectivity” comes from leftwing identity politics, from exactly those “woke” radicals who are supposedly unserious and irrational, this is where the Arbiters of Reason tend to direct their ire.’

To my mind, a man without a bias cannot write interesting history — if, indeed, such a man exists. I regard it as mere humbug to pretend to a lack of bias.

: "The students think that data is a matter of describing things as they are, and that there is no art to it and certainly no fashion. They very much want to let things speak for themselves when they approach a project like designing a schema to describe a set of things. What my students paradoxically fail to realize, in their zeal to be responsible, is that describing things by certain characteristics rather than others merely because those characteristics are countable is a profoundly subjective decision.

I remember vividly one especially conscientious student who designed a schema for describing socks. To keep her data as objective as possible, she specified only quantitatively measurable attributes, such as thickness in millimeters, circumference of the ankle opening, and precise composition of materials. She avoided anything that had the appearance of human judgment, such as what the socks might feel like on human skin, what outfits they might complement, or their stylishness. But was her data objective? Not at all. The circumference of the ankle opening? That’s one of the most subjective data elements I could have possibly imagined. What a useless bit of data! It was selected solely because the data creator had a personal preference for the appearance of objectivity. When we view objectivity and subjectivity as opposites rather than complements, this is the kind of trap we find ourselves falling into."

@adamdavidson Interpretation is 1) part of discussion sections and not the results section and 2) interpretation does not necessitate persuasion, neither is it necessarily opinion. Interpretation can be merely logical deduction, combining 'net effects' etc. which are entirely objective processes.

@librenews @adamdavidson I've only made it through the first 30 minutes, but I'm trying to figure out if he has clear definition for "unbiased". I think that term may be clear in the context of a tightly regulated scenario like a lawsuit, where there are two clearly defined parties involved and a judge aims to not favor one over the other (along with strict rules about what information can be introduced to the courtroom). But I really don't know what it means in open environments where we only have the resources and attention to focus on a tiny sliver of reality.

@dermedientyp @adamdavidson What they call 'non-partisan' is typically 'bipartisan' -- in other words, reflecting the opinions of the political elites of their country, while ignoring everyone else (including all the minor parties).

@vartak @adamdavidson No. Scientific papers are indeed often written as arguments "this is what I think is happening and why (and here's all the raw data)". They may not be the best papers, but they aren't the worst one either. The worst ones are data dumps without any clear interpretation. .

: "In a context where publications are scrambling to compensate for a shrinking share of ad dollars by expanding readership, it is little wonder why they are investing more in opinion, and less in fact-gathering, than they did in more flush times.

Moreover, as the ad-based business model that undergirded “objectivity” falls apart, outlets have naturally sought to convert their core readers into paying subscribers. Given that America is now home to a vast conservative-media ecosystem, the readerships of mainstream publications are generally liberal. And in an era of polarized politics and algorithmically inflamed culture wars, those readers are liable to demand ideological confirmation from the outlets they patronize.

At the same time, precariously employed journalists have every incentive to build up their personal social-media brands. After all, their employers cannot credibly promise them job security. The more followers they accrue, the more favorable their odds of finding a new job after a layoff or launching a successful Substack or Patreon. And if you wish to maximize your Twitter following, it is not generally advisable to refrain from sounding off about breaking-news events before all relevant details are confirmed nor to prioritize epistemic humility over affirming the ideological preconceptions of your core audience."

To advance the ideals of intellectual humility and conscientious reportage, one must recognize how the demands of the digital-media market militate against those values. Objective reporting (as Baron defines it) is worth defending. "But the primary threats to its production are commercial imperatives, not virtue-signaling millennials or postmodern professors." nymag.com/intelligencer/2023/0
