Happy last day of everyone!! It's finally a nice sunny day, so I'll be riding my bike out to the local cemeteries and visiting my ancestors and cleaning their headstones. I watched some Japanese horror films last night and I'll watch a few more today. Was at the cafe just now to start my trip and was ordering breakfast and accidentally started speaking Japanese, lol.

It's Obon here in Japan - a holiday strongly connected to ghosts and supernatural things. During these few days, the souls in hell are given a break and allowed to visit their families back in the land of the living.

Festival is happening at the [Japanese] Buddhist Temple of today. 12 noon to 5pm. San Jose will be performing, along with martial arts demos, bonsai, lots of food, games, a raffle, and respect for the ancestors.

It's July, and Bazaar season is in full swing, this weekend at the Southern Alameda County Buddhist Church in Union City. While my wife brought home a load of plants, I bid on a Sumitsubo set: a traditional Japanese carpenter's line with an ink stone and brush.

Besides wanting to try to recover my calligraphy skills, I'm also fascinated by the mythology around ink stones. In addition to being artworks on their own, Chinese artisans considered the ink stone the most important physical element of penmanship, and Japanese mythology holds that an ink stone that is used to copy the same story over and over will start to take on aspects of the story.

I miss the Obon festivals where I used to live. The dancing was always my favorite part.
