By measuring the exact timing of the star dimming/disappearance and comparing the notes of many geo-separate observers, a surprisingly accurate picture is made.

90 minutes prior to the start of the occultation, conditions were mostly clear with scattered clouds and I was able to snap a poor photo of the Moon approaching Mars. At the start of the occultation, the conditions had deteriorated to mostly cloudy with isolated sucker holes.
