Ocean heat is off the charts — here’s what that means for humans and ecosystems around the world
Drought in Europe, dwindling Arctic sea ice, a slow start to the Indian monsoon — unusually hot ocean temperatures can disrupt climate patterns around the world, as an ocean scientist explains.

The instruments:
🚨 Carbon atmospheric concentrations currently at 424 ppm
🚨 Methane atmospheric concentrations currently at 1919.97 ppb
🚨 Heating above preindustrial average currently at +1.27°C
🚨 Ocean temperatures currently +20.9°C (60S-60N)

NOAA’s May 2023 Global Climate Report has been released.
The oceans registered their hottest May in 174 years
CO2 = 424.34 ppm
🌡️ = +1.27°C above pre-industrial

This is great piece by Jeff Berardelli (@WeatherProf on 🐦) on the current ocean heat phenomenon

The research Dana posted didn't touch on ecological effects. There are likely many, but one high-visibility effect is mass coral bleaching events. There has been much published on this.
I highly recommend the Netflix documentary Chasing Coral: https://www.netflix.com/title/80168188
It's a beautifully produced film that takes a deep dive into the issue.

OCEAN HEAT IS ACCELERATING
By far the most heat goes to Southern Ocean
Heat reaches full ocean depth

ACCELERATING OCEAN HEAT 1960-2022
Heat from GHG emissions is extending to the full ocean depth.
Increased ocean heat is a factor increasing extreme weather.
This increasing ocean heat is irreversible.

@davidho Great!
My mind is still blown away by this Sputnik chart of the ocean basin temperature trend 1960-2019. Credits to Lijing Cheng et al (2019). That came up the other day, remember? Simply the best Ocean visualisation, methinks.

Ocean heat, deoxygenation and acidification are “alarming”
The ocean absorbs more than 90% of #excess heat trapped by greenhouse gases; absorbs 23% of #CarbonDioxide emissions; and is the source of more than half of the #oxygen we breathe.
According to the World Meteorological Organization’s State of the Global Climate in 2021 report, #SeaLevelRise, #OceanHeat, ocean #acidification and #GreenhouseGas concentrations set new #records in 2021.

Four key #ClimateChange indicators break records in 2021
Four key #climate change indicators – #GreenhouseGas concentrations, #SeaLevelRise, #OceanHeat and ocean #acidification – set new records in 2021. This is yet another clear sign that human activities are causing planetary scale changes on land, in the ocean, and in the atmosphere
