Sea surface temperatures around Alaska are mostly near to above normal except for a portion of the northeastern Bering Sea in NOAA/PSL/ESRL data. Southern Beaufort Sea remain elevated but are slowing drifting closer to average as the effects of the hot summer Mackenzie River discharge diminishes. Western Bering Sea and eastern Gulfof Alaska have warmed (relative to average) this week.

Sea surface temperature departures from 1991-2020 average in the seas around Alaska haven't changed too much in the past week in NOAA/PSL/ESRL data. The extreme warmth in the southeast Beaufort Sea is slowing decreasing. Eastern Bering Sea remains cooler than average. Gulf of Alaska mostly close to average.

Sea surface temperatures in the oceans around Alaska for the week ending August 18 show closer to normal than last week in the Gulf of Alaska while the western Bering Sea has warmer relative to the 1991-2020 average in NOAA//PSL/ESRL data. Eastern Bering Sea remains cool while the southeast Beaufort Sea remains unusually warm but not quite as far above average as in July and early August.

Worlds oceans between 60°S and 60°N have (preliminary analysis) equaled the highest average sea surface temperature on record that was set in early April 2023. Sea surface temperatures for the week ending August 11, 2023 were above the 1991-2020 average in NOAA/PSL/ESRL data. Southeast Beaufort Sea remains extremely warm, as much as 10ºC above average, thanks to super warm Mackenzie River discharge. Cooler than normal persisting in the eastern Bering Sea. The colder water in the far western Chukchi Sea south of Wrangel Island due to slow melting sea ice.
