Just finished reading two cracking good queer space operas by Everina Maxwell. Highly recommend.

There was a main character in one of them who I somehow cast in my head as the actor who played Jeff on #Community. He was so similar and just as ambivalently sympathetic. I couldn't really visualize the other guy as a particular actor, but Tennal was totally Jeff. Sometimes my brain just does that.

I love the world of Winter's Orbit, where almost everyone wears simple symbolic pronoun markers in the form of jewelry. Wood for masc, flint for fem, glass for nonbinary, and various combinations of them.

As a dedicated lover of terrible milsci-fi, I'm really enjoying the way this author is using the trope of "fuckup hot mess turns their shit around with command" and Tennal. It's not quite inversion, but it's something interesting. #OceansEcho

She also does a really good job of telegraphing social mores as part of characterization - what Tennal picks up on vs what Surit does. #OceansEcho

Okay I finished reading #OceansEcho by #EverinaMaxwell & I really enjoyed it. Best reading experience ever.

I do admit I wish the 2 mains had been hurt more (read: the story could've gone darker than it did) and then in turn that the 2 mains had been more affectionate (explicit heart-melting hugs/cuddles) with each other.
