By 16th C, Lemnian earth (as it came to be called) was available in different sizes/earths of various colors. (Some genuine, some not.) Also, by 16th C, the soil was still only dug on 6 August, with some ceremony.

Terra Lemnia is a reddish alumina-based earth, named after its source the Greek island of Lemnos. Historically, it was used medicinally to treat ulcers, diarrhea, and snake bites.
