I saw this several years ago at UNC Memorial Hall when it was still in development, so I'm looking forward to seeing how it has evolved and how it fills the much larger space of David Geffen.

Super  !

Of the two series, I think I prefer the other, but this one does have something interesting to say too (:*

(pub 1979) by after season 1 of the TV adaptation (2023) (on + in Australia).

Riveting time travel story; Dana is transported from modern LA to a Maryland plantation in 1815.

Was first drawn to the TV series by the mention of Ms Butler, having read her two Parable books while Trump was President.

“The “Parable” books, which were written in the 1990s and set in the 2020s, have seen a resurgence in popularity in recent years. Butler’s vision of the near future in these works – with society on the brink due to looming environmental catastrophe, unchecked corporate greed and worsening economic inequality – seems prescient

on Disney+
8 parts based on the 1979 novel by

Story begins in 2016
then Dana suddenly finds herself in the year 1815 (on a plantation). Just as suddenly, she is back in 2016.

The how and why are intriguing, but as we expect with an Octavia E Butler story (cos the woman was a genius) there are layers upon layers to explore.

Kindred is not just “plantation porn” and 3 themes are immediately obvious;
*how white privilege operates when circumstances change; and
*how “the whole is other than the sum of its parts” (which is to say, changing the behaviour of one individual has different consequences from changing a whole system); and
* how different world-views can really be

As I’ve not read the novel yet I can’t speak to Ms Butler’s intentions, just about the TV adaptation. But I HAVE to read the book now because the show wasn’t renewed and I really really really want more.
(it’s nowhere near as creepy as the trailer suggests)

Published in 1979, a journey back in time, I stand thinking of how appropriate it is for current day. Possibly the future as well.

i first read this book - written in 1993 - while Trump was president.
if i had read it earlier, wouldn’t have been half so surprised by the rule of the big 3 buffoons in UK, US, Aus

a cli-fi dystopian novel with a religious story woven into it - but all of that aside - Butler has an astounding level of clarity, clearly expressed, about what makes the (western) world tick

A thoroughly enjoyable, compact collection of and from one of the grand dames of science fiction.

Nautittava kuuden novellin kurkistus Octavia E. Butlerin lyhyen muodon teksteihin. Mukana niin novelleja kuin pari esseetÀ, mikÀ oli hauska ja erilainen valinta.

“Regarded by many as the definitive cli-fi novel, Parable of the Sower 1993 by Octavia Butler imagines what our future could look like if we don't take swift and appropriate action to mitigate climate change.”

(first read this while Trump was President; the socio-economic world Butler describes seems prescient)

Saturday morning reads:

This, from Octavia Butler's 'Kindred', hit me hard.

History matters. All of it, and especially the bits that make us most uncomfortable with ugly truths.
