Upgrading the ramshackle approach of his early work, Beck enlisted the turntablism of the Dust Brothers for this minor blockbuster, replete with hits like “Where It’s At” and “New Pollution.” Sonic textures vary from 70s funk (“Novacane”) to Eastern raga (“Derelict”) to semi-conventional blues and folk-rock (“Hotwax,” “Jack-Ass”). Blanched-out hip-hop presides of course, but the Dusties’ help Beck take it to interesting new places.

I remember liking #MellowGold a lot - Truck Driving Neighbours Downstairs, Beercan, & the like… But it was unpolished.

Then came #Odelay - just great song after great song, Mutations, #MidnightVultures (which felt a bit under-appreciated at the time), & then #SeaChange… Which is quite some run.

Then #Guero, which retread some of the same ground as Odelay, but delivered & more (I just love #BlackTamborine, #Girl, #RentalCar, in particular).

There was really nowhere for the 1990s to go but down after Odelay, was there?
