Episode 61 - OD&D and Holmes Basic
This episode, I take a look at how I’ve used Holmes Basic with my OD&D (and AD&D) games, and a quick comparison of differences between the influential Basic set and the original game.

OD&D recap: Party learns that Elmon was bitten by death centipede, only cure is a potion made from its corpse. They have to go back to get it!
The party retraces steps back in Maw & finds a half-eaten corpse. They decide to explore more.
One room has kobold zombies w/centipedes & crude throne w/treasure underneath!. 3 white arrows w/silver tips, also gems.
PCs then find strange room w/floating, pulsing crystal they can't retrieve easily. They retreat back to town!

I'm going to write up the recap of this completely awesome, crazy Dungeon23 OD&D session... but since a picture is worth > 500 characters, here's what was written on the Jamboard map tonight.
About to start another session in my Dungeon23 dungeon! The players are bound and determined to find some phat lewt!
Favorite Con Module
To play: I don't get to play at cons all that often, I end up running mostly. My favorite "type" of game to play is in superhero or in types of games/systems that I don't normally play. That way, I get to experience new things and try out games that I don't have!
To run: I've really enjoyed learning about Greyhawk and using OD&D+Chainmail while I run my take on the classic D&D module T1 Village of Hommlet.

12. Old game that I still play - Well, all of my games are "old" versions and this is is similar to Day 5's answer: OD&D (1974 w/out supplements) + Chainmail (3rd ed, 1975); Traveller (1977); AD&D (1977).
Why do I enjoy them so much more than more modern versions? That's a hard question to answer because all of my answers come down to "I just enjoy them more." I can still find great players who want to play them! And that's enough for me.

5. "Oldest Game You have Played"
That has to go to Whitebox ODnD.
Yup. I played it. As a study. But the campaign went on 5 months, so it WAS a real game. Needless to say, I hated it. But I made some good friends through it and they roleplayed well so it ended up being good regardless. I felt bad because I let idiots touch magic items and they would die, get cursed, or worse.

@LeviKornelsen I really enjoy all sorts of convos about GM/Ref business, especially #hexcrawls and sandbox elements, tools, etc. Mechanically, I’m most likely to hop into #dnd, #odnd, #adnd, #osr, or #nsr talk as I’m most familiar with those systems. I’ve got #traveller and #pendragon on my to-play list so I definitely keep my eyes peeled for posts about those. General #worldbuilding is fun too. Always looking for topics and materials to highlight on my YouTube channel, #hexedpress.

During one of the last eps of Wandering DMs it was pointed out that in white box #odnd 8th level fighters (superheroes was the class title) had the ability to detect invisibility.
I never noticed that before, but I also never delved that deep into it.
I do actually like that idea though. It kinda fits with a lot of the fiction where high level warriors have an almost supernatural sense for hidden enemies.
@LeviKornelsen ok then, #ttrpg things I am into

What are you opinions on the d20 dice itself. Do you find that it creates too large of a spread? Do you dislike how most games use the 1 and the 20 for critical failures and successes? Do you swap it out for 3d6 or something else?

New podcast episode!
I share four key resources that I think will help anyone who is trying to learn how to play along with the original three little brown books of Dungeons & Dragons as printed back in 1974. Plus, probably one of the most unusual call-ins from a fellow podcaster that you’ll hear!
