Question about geoblocking.

How do you determine what countries should be blocked at your edge?
We try to align with OFAC but there is no "OFAC list of countries" to block.
The Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) does not maintain a specific list of countries that U.S. persons cannot do business with.

We go with "if a person who lives in a specific country is on OFAC's SDN list, we will just block the whole country."
But this is extremely error-prone. We often get employees who are traveling to countries we are blocking and they'd like to be able to work.
We also have business partners with co-located data-centers in some of these countries so we've had to make exceptions.

There are more third-parties sharing lists of malicious domains and IPs than you can count. But I don't see anybody with an entire "bad country" list.

Ideally, we would block access to every country be default and then only allow those that are needed for day-to-day business.
The decision to just "block OFAC" was made a long time ago and I am not in a position to ask for our policies and procedures to be rewritten and possibly disrupt business to do it the right way now.
