Road trip in to civilization today to grab a replacement water pump.

Four hour round trip 😀

I disassembled and reassembled the pump and still couldn't get it working. I don't see anything visibly wrong with it but 🤷‍♂️

Hopefully replacing it works. Otherwise I've got a spare pump and still no running water 😂🤦‍♂️

The #victronenergy Phoenix inverters with eco mode are great to run a #fridge #offgrid e.g. from an old car battery charged from #solar panels ; this 12 | 500 just draws 65mA in eco mode (not inverting). The inverter powers on the AC output in configurable intervals and keeps it turned on as long as the power draw is above an adjuatable power level. As a modern fridge runs with a duty cycle of approx 20-30% the standby power consumption of the inverter affects the overall power consumption a lot. Fridge compressors draw a lot of initial power, so in my case I needed a 500W inverter (1kW peak) to drive a fridge that draws 60W during normal Operation.

Today's project: fixing the water pump. Cuz it just stopped working.

Yesssss!

Partly cloudy today but much cooler than it was earlier this week. During the clear periods, I'm seeing consistent 1150W from my #solar array.

That's 82% of rated output, which is a LOT better than the 58% I was getting on Monday when it was super hot.

The drop in output was definitely because of the heat

Ergh, I didn't plan for the power being used during the day when I built my solar setup.

Only about half of my solar output is going to charging the batteries... the rest is just going to normal power usage.

Well... time to add more panels :D

My solar array isn't putting out as much as I would've liked... but it's also stinkin' hot, and heat does have an impact on solar panels.

Seeing pretty constant 820W and it's rated for 1400W max. That's like 58% of their rating :\

Expecting to be cloudy and rainy for the rest of the week, so I suspect we'll be relying a lot on the generator. Batteries will only last 2-3 days without sun to charge them up.

Project "learn how to make an off-grid cabin" is proceeding. I got a small stack of used 40v 300w panels from my makerspace for free, so these are good 'starter's' - i'm not looking for all 300w from each :)

The biggest challenge so far was mounting. Climbing on hot roofs is not fun at my age, but these are now mounted and ready to be wired. Wheeee!

Landed safe at our off-grid launchpad campground.

We'll spend the weekend here stocking up supplies, filling our fresh water tank, and fueling up.

Sunday we head off to the wilderness, 2 hours from any city and 30-40 mins from the closest signs of civilization.

We'll be off grid until the first week of October. I'm super excited for the quiet downtime. Still connected and still working for 4 out of the 5 weeks, but the space and solitude will be lovely.

Trying to update/fix/upgrade our solar/battery while in Brazil is a bit stressful. We killed all our batteries by using the tiller pilot on overcast days. living with the land requires a certain level of calm when you find a huge live cane toad floating in one of your water buckets (toad juice!!!). or when you find a slug at the bottom of your veggie bowl. that bowl gets put in a tub every day at dusk so slugs don't get in, & yet!

(slugs here are carriers for angiostrongylus cantonensis, & the cane toads have poison skin. yay nature!)
