Succumbed to mu.
This had to happen eventually.

@cinerion @tomo That'll be an issue with any that uses #Emacs' internal #IMAP support (technically that could be rewritten to be asynchronous and indeed has been for some but meh).
The proper way to avoid that is to instead use another program like #mbsync, #mpop or #offlineimap to synchronize to a directory spool, which you can then use at local filesystem access speeds.
#emacs #imap #mbsync #mpop #offlineimap
@sqrtminusone That’s interesting, thanks for sharing! I guess I’ll try #OfflineIMAP at some point then. With #DavMail in the loop, the performance difference between #mbsync and OfflineIMAP should be negligible…
@true_mxp I just switched to #OfflineIMAP for use with #DavMail.
But my problem was that my Exchange instance somehow assigned duplicate UIDs to different emails in different folders, so #mbsync just couldn't download a large part of my mail. And OffineIMAP had some way to handle that more gracefully.
Grrr....
After some months of using #mbsync I noticed that unlike #offlineimap it doesn't sync all of the mail, just few months of the most recent letters... Can't find anything about this behavior in the docs.
@jesse Thank you! It happens I still use #OfflineIMAP myself, with #mu4e under #Emacs.
Ha, looks like I'm finally getting the hang of #OfflineIMAP. Wonder if now I can truly own and control all my email when combining it with #mutt?
Side note: 3.2 GiB of email downloaded today. I'm surprised that it wasn't the 5 gigs or more I was expecting, so I guess yay for file de-bloat?
@JonYoder You got me thinking in more detail why I reflexively avoid #Python now, despite the fact that I wrote two large programs (#OfflineIMAP and #pygopherd) in it, and published a book about it. 1/
#pygopherd #offlineimap #Python
Today I managed to install and configure
- my contacts (vdirsyncer + khard, formerly khal)
- my calendar (calcurse + calcurse-caldav. Might switch to vdirsyncer)
- my mail (offlineimap + neomutt)
- my todo txt (todo.sh)
Not happy with saving credentials in plain text :-(
But I can look into Lua (conky and awesome WM widgets) next!

Ended up going with #isync, primarily because I haven't tried it before.
I had good experiences with #OfflineIMAP in the past, but the python2->python3 migration hit me hard, because OfflineIMAP became unusable for a rather long period of time because of it. Such a thing is unlikely to happen in the foreseeable future, but one such experience ended up being enough to sway me to the alternative.
As part of reorganizing my stuff, I'll be reorganizing how I deal with e-mail. In the past, I've used #OfflineIMAP to sync, and #notmuch to tag, organize, and otherwise deal with it. I stopped doing that when Debian started transitioning to Python3 and it broke.
Now it has been ported to py3, but since I'm redoing this whole thing, I'm looking for other options too.
I don't need much: download mail, sync read status back, run notmuch after.
Any other options other than OfflineIMAP & #isync?
@eludom Yes, that's me! I wrote #OfflineIMAP back in somewhere like 2002 and maintained it for a number of years. Eventually I handed over maintainership to others when I switched to something else. But now that I'm reading mail under #Emacs with #mu4e, I've been using it again for the last few years.
@CarlCravens Yes, quite right! And I actually am an #OfflineIMAP user again, using it with #mu4e under #emacs as my primary mail interface.
Seit dem #Vodafone an den Mailservern rumgefrickelt hat, komme ich weder mit #K9-Mail, noch mit #mutt, oder #offlineimap stabil an meine Mails. Mal gehts, mal nicht. Zum ko....
