A recent report from the University of Washington’s Center for Human #Rights warned that the vast quantity of data gathered and shared by license-plate reader cameras could aid attempts to deport #migrants or prosecute out-of-state residents seeking abortions in #Washington – two things state legislators have passed laws to discourage.

The report cited #Yakima, as well as #police departments in #VancouverWA and #Okanogan County, for feeding plate scans into commercial databases accessible to federal immigration enforcement #agents and sharing plate data with police departments in states where #abortion is a crime.

@barrososemminas it’s a very long story! 😄 in 1988 we noticed exploration beginning in our rural area of #Okanogan county (#WA state, US). Once we understood that they were going to put in an open pit, cyanide leach gold mine at the top of Buckhorn Mt, citizens began to organize & educate themselves. Plus I think as a WA state non-profit our board must be volunteer (i will double check) we barely survived the pandemic, financially, & have reached out to coop orgs for advice. As more large #dataCenters are built near the #Dams on the #ColumbiaRiver, the prices for residential #Electricity will be impacted. #HydroPower is considered #green but there are many #externalities. Smaller, consumer-owned cooperatives like #Okanogan #PUD may find less power to buy.
