In the history of contemporary creativity there is a very peculiar episode: that of DUCHAMP'S "FINANCIAL DOCUMENTS" (several "cheques" and some rather "suspicious" bonds). These creations by Duchamp have been interpreted in different ways. Here is a very interesting article by Olav Velthuis (2000) that reviews this subject: "Duchamp’s Financial Documents: Exchange as a Source of Value".
"Duchamp’s financial documents both specify and generalize his overall artistic enterprise. Rather than addressing all institutions of the art world, they nail art down at one specific institution: the art market. Rather than questioning artistic worth, they address the general question of how value comes into being".

Many works have been published on the relationship between artistic production and economics (previously a taboo subject in the academic world). I recommend, for example, this amazing book by Olav Velthuis: Talking Prices.

@srfirehorseart Michael Baxandall put it quite clearly: “Money is very important in the history of art. It acts on painting not only in the matter of a client being willing to spend money on a work, but in the details of how he hands it over.” And “paintings are among other things fossils of economic life” (Source: Painting and Experience in Fifteenth Century Italy, 1988).
