Interesting juxtaposition of everyday life, revolution, and state violence in an early 20th-century short by film pioneer Alice Guy. Gender, class, and respectability also figure in this tale, which features a nonchalant summary execution.

They don't make films like they used to, watched 'A matter of life and death' this afternoon starring David Niven and made in 1946.

Midnight (Mitchell Leisen, 1939)

Simple, relaxing, entertaining film that never disappoints. If you're having a tough week, trust me and just give it a go.

Rich stencil coloured sequences, intriguing mise en scène and elaborate costumes can be found in abundance in Rapsodia Satanica [Satan’s Rhapsody] dir. Nino Oxilia, 1917.

Director Carol Reed and cinematographer Robert Krasker meet for the first time in the phychologically intense and visually stunning film noir Odd Man Out (1947).

An absolute bonus for the film, James Mason's soulful performance as the hunted IRA revolutionary Johnny McQueen.

Norma Desmond is an optimist and frankly so am I.

Happy 2023! 🥳

This week's on very clearly influenced by the fact that I've been reading a book called 'Hollywood in the Thirties'.

Now watching: ‘Death Race 2000’, dir. Paul Bartel, 1975. Reminds me strongly of ‘The 10th Victim’ – dystopia on a shoestring.

Last night's was 1937's "Easy Living." The Sturges screenplay isn't so crisp, and it may be director Leisen's first stab at comedy, and it shows. Jean Arthur is a delight throughout, Edward Arnold does most of the other acting work (Ray Milland may as well be a hatrack for all he's given to do), several of what would be the Sturges stock company appear, and I was pretty sleepy anyway so won't judge it too harshly.
