Love these sculpted details on the front of the old North Fire Station on Saint George's Road in Glasgow. Opened in 1889, it closed in 1984.

The former North Fire Station on Saint George's Road in Glasgow.
Built in 1889, this fire station had space on the ground floor for a steam-powered fire engine and a manual fire engine. Unusually for the time, it doesn't seem to have had space for horse-drawn fire engines (or stabling for horses themselves).
It finally closed in 1984.

In the mid-1800s, hoses made from strips of leather were replaced by ones woven from flax. The first of these were produced in Scotland in 1850 and although they were much lighter in weight, they had to be dried after each use to stop them rotting. This was done by hanging them vertically in hose-drying towers like this one.

If you've ever driven along the Clydeside Expressway in Glasgow, you'll have seen this tower near the Thornwood Roundabout. It's part of the old Partick Fire Station on Beith Street, and it was originally built as a hose-drying tower.

The centre of the Wallace Street elevation of the former Southern Fire Station in Glasgow. Opened in 1916, this ws the first fire station in the city to be specifically designed to house motorised (rather than horse-drawn) fire engines.

Functional, but beautifully tiled, arched doorway in the old Partick Fire Station on Beith Street, Glasgow.
I love the fact that this feature was kept, unaltered, when this building was turned into residential flats.

Entrance to the old Partick Fire Station on Beith Street. It was opened in 1907, when fire engines in Glasgow were still pulled by teams of horses, and this fire station included stabling for eight of them.
The building was designed by James Miller in the Edwardian Queen Anne Revival style.
