project. May 2023.

Still trying to decide whether this one is going to make the final cut into the project.

With the release of Photoshop generative fill and other AI tools, I figure I should note that my photography is of real stuff unless otherwise noted. My project wouldn’t have meaning if it was all made up or half fabricated. I see my work as occupying a quasi-journalistic space. I do clone out dust spots on the sensor and use AI tools to help select sky to modify its exposure, for example, if it’s really blown out.

Imperfection is part of life, I also embrace it in photography.

@sbphoto Me too, right now I've been focused on the wind turbines. I really enjoy that is telling a story that is so local, but general enough that many people will understand it and relate. It's midwest American development. I see my town in these images too.

At 174th Street in west Omaha, an old red brick two lane highway emerges from between two glitzy looking car dealerships like a ghost. It ends unceremoniously at an intersection, cut off by new development and the Dodge freeway.

This old bit of road is a remnant of the Lincoln Highway, one of (if not the first) transcontinental highways in the US.

series. Sidney Buchanan’s sculpture “Tree House with French Doors” looms over new developments in west Omaha. I believe this sculpture used to sit in the Gene Leahy Mall in downtown Omaha before being moved west. February 26, 2023.

"Spring and Summer are coming, and with it, harsh sun to bake shade-less streets and homes. And new laws which promise to wash that American Dream away with the spring rains."

Trying this out out for possible inclusion in the project. Not sure if it's going to make the cut yet. This project is really tough for me to choose images for. One thing that continues to surprise me is just how close these developments abut major power line corridors. January 16, 2023.

There's something bleak and oddly quiet about much of new suburban .

A missing part of this project might be the people. Who are they? What are their hopes and dreams?

Certainly this project is complicated. I started it in part to react to just how quickly farmland and former prairie is being gobbled up on the city's outskirts. But there's also the human side. These new homes represent new opportunities. Places to raise families.

A new addition to my project. This chunk of land in West Omaha contains a small maze of roads, all set to support new homes. In the meantime, grasses and other vegetation have started returning to the once-prairie landscape. As I walked these roads, I was surprised at how many birds fluttered in and out of the grasses, presumably feeding on seeds from last season.

From my series. January 17, 2022.

I feel drawn to documenting the sprawl occurring on the Omaha outskirts. This is not a "fun" project by any means, but it feels important. I've also felt quite challenged to find compelling images. I feel that this one might be successful. The homes cresting over the horizon kind of haunts me.
