Built a new #omnios build machine, actually using cloud-init instead of jacking into the serial console for initial setup. Still nowhere near as automated as I want, but if I start rebuilding every couple of days, it should get easier.
Now to kick off Till’s image build script to get my own braich image.

Is the main difference between #omnios & #openindiana the shell script build system in https://github.com/omniosorg/omnios-build vs the ports-like https://github.com/OpenIndiana/oi-userland?
Or is there actually something interesting in the 4k commits diff between illumos-gate & illumos-omnios? I’m seeing almost entirely branding and file ordering changes. (Also, only 18 contributors!?)

Which is fun, I was wanting to dig into the same for #OpenIndiana to see about emitting a VMDK.

The dev machine is operational! #OmniOS on OCI AMD processor, delightfully boring. I still want to come back to spinning up an #OpenIndiana instance as a real workstation, but this works enough to get a build running.
Once I have it kicked off, I’ll start adding basic repeatability scripting, asset uploading, etc. eg continuous integration like it’s 1999.
Also, I’m going to start using #IllumosOnArm just so I can find my messages later.

#OmniOS is a really nice server oriented #Unix in my experience. I've never put it into production, but have it running on some decommed machines at work. It was surprisingly straightforward to expose ZFS datasets as #FibreChannel LUNS using COMSTAR. Havn't played much with Zones yet, but that seems cool too

Gave up futzing with instance principal authentication in OCI IAM and just used a pre-authenticated request to get the #OmniOS image uploaded & imported. Now I’ve just got to convert this #OpenIndiana raw disk image into a VMDK with qemu-img(1)…

Trying to spin up #OmniOS and #OpenIndiana instances over in oracle cloud because I don’t have any decent hardware at home anymore, and the irony is delicious.
I’m hoping the basic VMDKs just work, as much as I just love do a PXE boot install over there.
Now the real question is, by what criteria should I pick the one I stick with?

With the new #OmniOS LTS (r151046) dropping, you can now install `vioscsi` package and switch your linodes over to para-virtualization so you get vioscsi and vioif devices for better performance. (And shoter boot times)

Aye yo! WTF!! I some how came across something called #SmartOS or #OmniOS as type1 hypervisor that load their base shit in memory!! I have been using it daily for the last few months and I absolutely love it. Best of all, rust-analyzer just works out of the box. Looking forward to the git-gutter PR to land so I can stop carrying a patch around with me.

My #omnios based Fibrechannel SAN is complete. #ZFS all the things! As a hobbyist photographer, I’m always surprised when other big photographers rely on non-reliable file systems for their archives. Also, going with a SAN means my volumes look like local disks to my Macs (which has a lot of benefits).

I am always happy when my #OmniOS box works.

Currently running all the databases for all the application in my k8s cluster

I am also slowly turning stupid if I continue to try to make postgresql start at boot on #omnios
