Worth reading this. The TLDR is that Chrome has a new feature where people will assume that it gives greater protection and it doesn't.

The popup is very misleading.

There seems to be a big push right now to eliminate anonymous usage of various online services in the US. This is being done under the guise of safety and security.

I personally find this extremely alarming. As a queer person, I would feel much less safe using social media living where I do, if I could not do so somewhat anonymously.

This seems to be happening whether we like it or not. How do we fight back against this in an effective way?

There’s a lot of advertising out there for VPNs and Private Browsers that will protect your privacy on the internet. Unfortunately, most of them are misleading, because protecting your privacy online is mostly a matter of figuring out *who are you trying to avoid being tracked by?*

Avoiding having a browsing history on your local device? Use a private tab/browser that doesn’t retain a local history.

Avoiding having your ISP know what sites you visit? Use a custom DNS server or VPN. (Though be aware that the entity operating the DNS or VPN may track your activity instead.)

Avoiding being tracked by your search engine? Use Duckduckgo or Ecosia or similar.

Avoiding being tracked by advertisers as you surf around? Use an adblocker or cookie blocker or similar.

Unfortunately, using all of those in combination with one another will make for a pretty bad browsing experience… but it’ll be private!

I've got a small weekly video conference that I want to move off of Zoom. I have been considering a Jitsi Meet instance on a VPS but I don't have experience self-hosting and I wonder if I'm overthinking this. We never have more than a dozen participants. Anyone have a preferred, privacy-respecting, user-friendly solution to recommend? Most of our participants are non-technical.
