Now the dust has settled on the #ONS data revisions, the euphoria of #JeremyHunt looks a little misplaced... the overall revision is upwards, but the detailed figures show:

while #services output has been considerably raised, manufacturing, construction, agriculture and oil & gas extraction have all declined.

So, in the earlier data, since #Brexit, #agriculture had increased by 11.7%, but now has dropped by 7%

& the iron & steel sector from a rise of 56% between 2019-22 to a decline of 66%!

Well #RishiSunak has just had a lucky break... #ONS data revisions suggest that while the UK was still in the lower part of the distribution of #GDP recovery after the #pandemic, it is now not an outlier.

To be clear, while this is welcome news for the #Tories, the recovery was still among the lowest in the G7 & nothing to be celebrating in absolute terms.

But you can bet this will be treated as a vindication by the #Tories in their nascent #election campaign (& miss-reported in the media)!

Suspension of the weekly, @ONS, Coronavirus (COVID-19) Infection Survey, UK Statistical bulletins, was an error.
#ONS reports provided the clearest indication of the 'Covid' situation across the UK.
@Join_ZOE tracked #ONS closely, and now estimates a 45% rise in cases in 8 weeks.

#ONS research suggests that core #inflation in the UK is declining, which either suggests that the BoE's #interestrates policy is working or the real drivers of inflation in the UK are easing;

So, it will be interesting to see what the BoE does next... if they do not pause interest rate rises (or even reverse the rises) then we can safely say they're not really interested in inflation, but rather are seeking to discipline #workers while #profits are protected.

I should add also that during the #pandemic the #infectionsurvey run by the #ons was among the most reliable and trustworthy sources of information. It was telling that #didoharding unlamented head of #testandtrace did not take account of it when allocating resources in the late summer of2020. That failure had terrible consequences for #london

In this context I must say that though I regard the overall record of the 1997-2010 #labour government as mixed at best an achievement that has stood the test of time was the creation of the #ons - Office for National Statistics - with far greater independence than its predecessors. #ons can fairly be regarded as a world leading institution - one of very few #britain has to its name - arguably #nice - the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence - is another.

Official #ONS figures show around one in twenty people in the UK said they had run out of food in the past two weeks and couldn't afford more.

Latest official data showed food price inflation at 18.3% - far higher than the 8.7% rate of overall #inflation.

But don't worry, the rich are still getting richer, and that's all that matters to this Tory government and to the Bank of England.

Since January, the best paid have had the highest wage hikes, but the majority of #UK workers have seen their salary growth fall, according to #ONS data.
This is at odds with the governor of the Bank of England's claim that middle to low income earners are driving wage #inflation.
