Dongfang Meiren Cha, or Eastern Beauty Oolong Tea, is a Taiwanese bug bitten tea. A leafhopper called the "tea jassid" is prevalent in the areas where this tea is grown and actually encouraged on the tea plants used to produce the tea. The character of the tea itself is more similar to oxidized styles of Fujian White tea than to other Oolong tea. Dried stonefruit scent, light sweet flavor, and little to no bitterness or astringency even when pushed or overdosed. This is a summer 2020 Dongfang Meiren from Mud and Leaves.

After some time, the #tea path continues. This time it might be not that long as I’ve purchased 10 samples, not 30. The teas are from Taiwan and Japan.

The first one tasted is the Taiwanese #oolong, Tang Bei Dong Ding. It has the strong roasted aroma with the oolongish aftertaste. I didn’t add it to my collection, as these days I have absolutely no wish to drink roasted (Da Hong Pao-like) teas.🙃

In Sanming, Fujian I had an Eastern Beauty oolong (东方美人茶) made from the mei zhan cultivar, usually used for black teas in Fujian. It was amazing. You could taste the floral notes typical of mei zhan combined with the honey sweetness from the leafhoppers and processing. I don't remember the name of the farm, but I would love for some tea company to find that and sell it to me.

Usually I drink a more oxidized amber oolong from Taiwan. On my last order I bought a 15 gram sample of this traditional Taiwan oolong.
OH MY! It’s a bit of a (ahem) steep steep for me, at over $30 for 125 grams but it’s incredibly wonderfully tasty (slightly fruity and grassy, without the too-grassy taste I dislike in green teas). I may have to splurge…
