Dongfang Meiren Cha, or Eastern Beauty Oolong Tea, is a Taiwanese bug bitten tea. A leafhopper called the "tea jassid" is prevalent in the areas where this tea is grown and actually encouraged on the tea plants used to produce the tea. The character of the tea itself is more similar to oxidized styles of Fujian White tea than to other Oolong tea. Dried stonefruit scent, light sweet flavor, and little to no bitterness or astringency even when pushed or overdosed. This is a summer 2020 Dongfang Meiren from Mud and Leaves.

2021 Pinglin Natural Farming Shui Xian "Water Dragon" from Taiwan/Yunnan Sourcing. This is a really interesting tea. Every steep shows a different character; sometimes fragrant, sometimes spicy, sometimes a little bitter, sometimes a little astringent. A little "naughty". For a Taiwan Oolong, it also has a surprising ability to continue steeping many times. I would be super interested to see how this tea aged.

I have yet to try a tea from Taiwan based company Eco-Cha Teas that I don't like and this Dong Ding Oolong is no exception. Pleasant roast level, good flavor, nice balance.

I've tried a few tea clubs and in terms of quality and quantity for the price, there are few better deals than the one from Eco-Cha Teas. On the other hand, if you drink anything other than their Taiwanese teas from the club, you might end up with a backlog. This is 2020 Dong Ding Oolong from the Eco-Cha Tea Club.

Continuing the tea from India adventure with Doke Rolling Thunder (handmade, organic) autumn flush, 2022, via MyTeaPal Club. They call this an Oolong, which, hm, more like half way between Darjeeling and a lightly oxidized red. Low astringency makes it pretty easy to brew. Some charcoal character in the empty cup. The mix of oxidation levels on the leaves lends multifaceted complexity to the flavor, during the session the tea sometimes tastes green, sometimes red. Overall an enjoyable brew.
