This ex-military tablet was a great eBay find. Waterproof, smash-resistant and with superbright (sunlight viewable) display.

It has a digitizer pen and a broken touchscreen (dead controller). It turns out after getting used to it, the pen is actually better anyways - it allows more precise input and works when completely wet, where phone touchscreens cease to work and marine touchscreens get fidgety.

Running #OpenCPN of course.

Plotting every route option on #OpenCPN is all nice and good, but without some better weather soon it's all rather theoretical!

We need to go west, but we have 30 knots coming from there for days. Then a Mistral curving down with 30 knots from NNE, which would be good sailing wind except it has over 2m swell, which is no fun.

Looks like the next best option is in a week, where it all dies down to nothing and we're kindly allowed to motor the entire way. Depressing.

#OpenCPN tip: With AIS, you can open the "Target Query" dialog and click "Record Track". This will store the track of another boat and show it on your chart.

One use of this is keeping an eye on other boats dragging at anchor. In the screenshot below, you can see several boats swaying at anchor, which creates an arc centered around the anchor.

If a boat is dragging, it zig-zags away from its arc, as SY Rosbeg is illustrating here. They need to reset their anchor.

Wow, picking up (class A) AIS signals from 80 nautical miles distant Malta tonight. There's even some land between here and there.

Current best options for a Friday start to Sicily. The top one is two nights at sea, the bottom two start later and are three nights. Downside of the top one, we still have to hop down along the coast and the wind is wrong for that.

OpenCPN's weather routing plugin is awesome - just discovered the wave size limiter so we can sail in more comfort (2m waves in the Mediterranean are icky because they tend to be very steep and close together).

Finally got around to writing down some rough polars for ⛵ Songbird. Then played with OpenCPN's weather routing plugin, which did a fine job last passage. Quite useful for predicting the best time to depart and also has a handy "Comfort" column :)

Just getting an idea for when to do the Greece to Sicily crossing. Still need to fill up Diesel and buy some food first.
