Today’s task (when not working) has been to install trust certificates for OpenDNS / Cisco Umbrella on the machines in my house so that a custom block screen is displayed if someone tries to access a blocked site.
Oh and catching up on Ted Lasso 😂

Woke up to no Internet connection this morning. After some troubleshooting I tracked the issue down to my #piHole and a quick reboot of that seemed to do the trick.
Over the last couple of days I'd happened to have started using #OpenDNS as my DNS server so that I can easily block websites in certain categories, and my first thought was I'd messed something up. 😃
Haven't even had time for a coffee yet, and as NetworkChuck always say, everything in IT needs #coffee 😀

I really need to clean up my #CrowdSec implementation. Specifically, how I’m using CrowdSec Bouncers. I have a mixture of applications that run over #Cloudflare tunnels, and others that terminate directly into my #selfhosted environment. I have a bouncer running on #OPNsense on the edge, which I’m not effectively using, and then my #Mastodon instance is using the Cloudflare bouncer, which I think is appropriate.
Now that I write this, the implementation isn’t the problem. It’s the lack of a cohesive strategy.
As an aside, if you are a #homelab or #selfhosted enthusiast, you really should check out the CrowsSec project. https://www.crowdsec.net. It’s a bit like #Cisco #Umbrella (aka #OpenDNS) in concept, but very different than that in execution.

I just stopped using any #opendns servers. I added them in the ancient pre-cisco days.
I was just curious why it was happening, since they "should" just return plain results, not filtered results.
Yes, this is what I see as well.
It only happens out *one* of my Internet connections (Starlink--but works on other Starlink) querying using OpenDNS server.
It doesn't happen if I use a different Internet connection.
It doesn't happen if I use a different nameserver.
Just that nameserver on that connection, #OpenDNS returns their own IP for queries to major social media sites. Huh.
I'm seeing unusual responses from #OpenDNS resolving the names of various social media sites. For example looking up twitter.com doesn't return a twitter IP, but an address owned by OpenDNS. Resolving the IP gives the hostname "hit-adult. opendns. com" (!).
Other nameservers return IP addresses that are owned by twitter.

Conoscete alternative che non siano #opendns e #googledns e che sopratutto non "loggano"?

Okay, I finished making a work-around to make #Voxi #Vodaphone user-friendly.
I set up #OpenDNS to use instead of the Vodaphone default DNS. This is a bit more private and faster. I also set up #ProtonVPN - this is more private, fast - not noticably slower than no vpn, and it disconnects me from Vodaphone sinister, random site-blocking / censorship.
Will see how it goes but if I have any other reason to distrust Voxi then I'll move on and try another service with higher ethical standards.

Anybody else been having issues with #OpenDNS lately? I have them set as my upstream DNS provder in my #PiHole. A week or two ago I couldn't log into a government website because of issues with OpenDNS. Now, the last couple of days I've been unable to visit my Plex server if I use the plex(dot)tv website, but the apps work fine. Turns out both issues are resolved by switching to a different DNS. Anybody got any suggestions for good, #privacy respecting upstream DNS servers?

@frehi I use #Cloudflare, and previously I was using #OpenDNS. I have zero faith that Google isn't using their DNS for additional tracking, and my ISP has done some weirdly sketchy things, like inserting their own stuff into non-SSLed sites. I just don't trust them to not abuse DNS, and their uptime is worse than Cloudflare's.
