The first version of their was available to developers nine months before and shipped with six months before was even announced.

4.1 on and 3.0 on iOS and are still available but were deprecated in favor of five years ago.

I think it’s less a matter of keeping up and more about not wanting to wait.

One thing that really blows about and specifically is how all the cool modern OpenGL stuff you want to use, isn't present on the core gles profile, and thus won't give you an audience of even 90% of phones.
