How do the cool kids generate #OpenGraph images today? I have a #Python / #Django project that needs a refresh and that is one of the things I want to address. Was thinking about using #Weasyprint, but that lost its PNG output a while ago. Use Weasyprint and then use pdftoppm to convert from PDF to PNG? Had a look at #Satori, but don’t really want to integrate a node-process into the backend.

Okay, it appears that the problem I was having with #OpenGraph not resolving was because of load time on the WP blog itself (I discovered when some weird glitch knocked out a bunch of sidebar widgets). So, making the blog more efficient, now post links are resolving into preview cards, which is a Good Thing (as Martha Stewart used to say). So unpinning the above message, huzzah!

Websites today require a hilarious amount of #metadata. There's favicon.ico and robots.txt, sure, those are classics. But don't forget your icon, apple-touch-icon, apple-touch-icon-precomposed, TWELVE #OpenGraph tags, sitemap.xml, .well-known/security.txt, and ads.txt. (I'm still not sure what the last one is about, but also I'm not doing ads so I suspect it doesn't matter.) How are you supposed to learn this? Is it even all written down in one place? I mean, I guess it is now.

@tpuddle @ldodds StreetComplete does have a "task" or whatever that it sometimes ask "does xxx still exist" like post boxes, or to check the opening times etc, but yes, it's not ideal. I have no idea how to make that easier. I don't know how Google and cylex do it. Is there something like #opengraph for opening times?

ADMINISTRIVIA: Time for my periodic ask. For some reason, links to wist.info are not generating #PreviewCards here on #Mastodon (though they do in Twitter, FB, diaspora*, etc., and they test clean on various #OpenGraph testing sites). E.g., https://wist.info/euripides/60428/ .

Since such title cards would include title info, that would be helpful for readers here.

Anyone know anyone who might have a clue as to what's not quite right?

Yesterday I added dynamic #opengraph images to my SO's upcoming website. There is an "activities program" section for her mountain leader events and I wanted a nice thumbnail for when people share one of them. I built the endpoint partly with #RustLang and compiled it to #WebAssembly. There is a nice crate "og_image_writer" that enabled me to get it done quickly. The endpoint runs in serverless functions on vercel, could not get it to play nicely with #SvelteKit on edge runners.

* Even #Facebook ❗
The only place where I [and lots of people on #stackexchange] get these problems is #Whatsapp.
Maybe the quickest fix would be to tell my friends to move to Signal :marx_thinking:

Although today is not #caturday, I'm trying to test theory that an #opengraph images lighter than 300KB can break the "whatsapp sometimes doesn't share the image" curse.

@colls so according to the #Mastodon documentation the title is coming from the #OpenGraph meta fields. However, when testing your site URL on Facebook & LinkedIn URL preview validators the title is showing correctly. So this does seem to be a bug in the Mastodon processing of sites for generating card previews.

#OpenGraph originated from Facebook and is a set of metadata fields that are in the <head> section of your html page. They are used to construct the preview of a link. In this case to your woocommerce site. I checked and looks like there is no OpenGraph present.

JSON-LD has the benefit of being maintained by W3C, being an open standard, having significant amount of momentum, and serving a plethora of different use-cases, many of which haven’t been invented yet.
