Is the main difference between #omnios & #openindiana the shell script build system in https://github.com/omniosorg/omnios-build vs the ports-like https://github.com/OpenIndiana/oi-userland?
Or is there actually something interesting in the 4k commits diff between illumos-gate & illumos-omnios? I’m seeing almost entirely branding and file ordering changes. (Also, only 18 contributors!?)

@Toasterson @sjorge @dexter @papertigers Guess I need to dig into the #omnios image build & publish script. I had no idea those images were for aarch64. Maybe it’s worth adding arch to the already long file names.
Which is fun, I was wanting to dig into the same for #OpenIndiana to see about emitting a VMDK.

Oooh, he olde PCC is working on x86_64 #illumos now? Even with an #OpenIndiana package and everything. https://briancallahan.net/blog/20230705.html
The dev machine is operational! #OmniOS on OCI AMD processor, delightfully boring. I still want to come back to spinning up an #OpenIndiana instance as a real workstation, but this works enough to get a build running.
Once I have it kicked off, I’ll start adding basic repeatability scripting, asset uploading, etc. eg continuous integration like it’s 1999.
Also, I’m going to start using #IllumosOnArm just so I can find my messages later.

Grr, haven’t been able to get any terminal time today. I know I’ve got to get #OpenIndiana converted to VMDK, which should be a simple qemu-img command, then we can upload and import into OCI compute imaging.
Gave up futzing with instance principal authentication in OCI IAM and just used a pre-authenticated request to get the #OmniOS image uploaded & imported. Now I’ve just got to convert this #OpenIndiana raw disk image into a VMDK with qemu-img(1)…
Trying to spin up #OmniOS and #OpenIndiana instances over in oracle cloud because I don’t have any decent hardware at home anymore, and the irony is delicious.
I’m hoping the basic VMDKs just work, as much as I just love do a PXE boot install over there.
Now the real question is, by what criteria should I pick the one I stick with?

Formatting one terabyte HD on #OpenIndiana. It's not a question of time. I've forgotten how it was to work on #Solaris. It is a universe!
Once it was Solaris. Today it is well opened. My first #openindiana installation, and it works pretty well.

Maybe I should try out some #OpenSolaris forks like #OpenIndiana running the #Illumos named fork of the #Solaris #Kernel...

Tonight I'm fixing a bug in #Firefox WebMIDI implementation that was reported by the #OpenBSD maintainer that also affected all other Unix platforms that aren't Linux. Sending positive vibes to all our non-tier-1 platforms, we love you all #FreeBSD #NetBSD #DragonflyBSD #OpenIndiana etc... I'm sure I missed some.

@pichan #illumos #OpenIndiana because when I code, I mostly code for me and if I write for others I prefer to stay portable, so having a not-so-mainstream OS helps me a lot with that.
First attempt at packaging #Tailscale to an :illumos_logo: #illumos distro. Got tangled in pkgsrc so #omnios / #omniosce gets the first one:

I imagine most of this work could be ported to #openindiana once I get the details ironed out.

Preparing a presentation about some OpenShift details (which are actually k8s details) by building #kubernetes on #OpenIndiana/#illumos - it’s going to be wild :)
