This is true. Don't be afraid to publish an article-length work as a book chapter rather than an article. But if the book won't be OA, don't forget to insist on retaining the right to make your chapter OA through a #repository, with an #OpenLicense and no #embargo.

If you’re interested in continuing to run #DnD / #5e but wizards is making you cringe. I highly advise En Publishing’s Advanced 5E. It seriously breathed new life into my game and if I ever have players begging for 5e I’ll be including these books. Also, it’ll likely be under #orc or other #openlicense

The Open Media Network (#OMN) is a project that empowers "normal" people to store their own data by using a mix of hot and cold storage.

The idea is to have a high level of redundancy to mitigate data loss and to build tools to search and reinport old data to "hot" storage. This approach is lean and efficient, as backup is cheap and offline, and it relies on humans to make it work. The #OMN is an #opendata and #openlicense project that stores most data unencrypted as most data is not private.

I think that this over-focuses on the royalty-free / gratis part of the arrangement, rather than the liberties.

I'm just curious why #CreativeCommons NC was considered preferable here.

If we want to talk terminology...

FreedomDefined.org can be used for a definition of a #FreeLicense, opendefinition.org for a definition of an #OpenLicense.

#Punctum doesn't seem to argue that NC is an open license.

Terms like "gratis #OpenAccess" are available to reduce confusion, see Peter Suber's classic book.

Some people consider a CC-BY-NC or CC-BY-ND as a suitable #OpenLicense for #OpenScience.
In my point of view, using licenses with additional obligations (e.g. NC or ND) would declassify anything as “open”.
If I cannot reuse an image or table from an article because I work at a non-profit research institute (clearly classified as commercial) (->NC) and add my own results to it (->ND) how can that be called open?
Then call it what it is, “only open for some under certain conditions”.
