Some schools in Aotearoa New Zealand are moving away from #OpenPlan classrooms. Fewer headaches, less distraction, more productivity. Will open plan offices and #HotDesking follow suit? Some workers in government agencies would be keen to have less noise and distraction too

Would love to hear from scientists or other academics who currently work in large #openPlan offices with #hotdesking (+ only 70% of the desk space needed means lockers absolutely no items left on the desk overnight).
How do you make it work? The combnation of focused work, close collaboration with some colleagues and lots of online meetings with externals?
What do I need to do now to prepare?
(Also open to job offers...)
Regards: a depressed scientist sho has just seen the future..

Thanks @adamlcarey and @GrattanInst for shining a light on the learning inefficiencies associated with architecturally trendy #openplan classrooms. If they’re challenging for adults, we can multiply the cognitive load for students. https://www.theage.com.au/national/victoria/bringing-the-noise-open-plan-classrooms-drive-debate-on-distraction-20230201-p5ch0b.html
@marie_ahoi thanks for the tag! I love your description. One of the few accounts I know of someone enjoying an #openPlan #OfficeDesign in academia. Is disruption / noise an issue at all? Where do people go who need to concentrate?
And yet employers keep on fitting out their office space with the work-killing, misery-fostering #OpenPlan layout.
Everyone hates open offices. Here’s why they still exist

If you are an employer who needs your workers to focus for long periods uninterrupted in order to get their work done, it's *your obligation* to provide that.
Don't treat “we let you work from home!” like it's some perk. No, that's the worker subsidising you for your shitty cheapskate #OpenPlan office layout that is fundamentally hostile to focus.
When your workers try working but can't because their neighbour is playing the trumpet https://social.chinwag.org/@Funkpirata/102829927490702824 that is *on you*, employer.
First major study of employee behavior upon switching from conventional floor plan to #openfloorplan offices reveals a greater than two-thirds decline in face to face interaction, a more than 50% increase in electronic interaction, and a decline in productivity in the #openplan offices (specifics of the productivity decline were not shared by the companies under study)
