How often is intellectual property () an important obstacle to sharing research , , and ?

I suspect that many other obstacles are more common and troublesome. But for those cases where IP is an obstacle, here's a proposal to work around it.

"Twitter 2.0 would just be the story of another corporate failure if not for the current state of the internet. After the first generation of the world wide web was built on open protocols such as email and web browsing, we were lured into web 2.0’s closed gardens because they were easy to use, powerful and promised a commitment to host and tend to the public square. So we made them our homes and built our lives around them. Now they’re locking the garden gates, we’ve got nowhere to go."

Well, they could go to Mastodon... Hopefully Twitter embeds in news articles will soon start being replaced by Mastodon embeds in news articles.

Elon Musk’s Twitter is in terminal decline and there’s nowhere left to go. msn.com/en-au/news/australia/e

People are remembering when Facebook & Google supported XMPP, until they didn't.

Don't forget that Slack supported IRC at the start too. Until they didn't.

The Kerberos protocol was developed in 1988, and since then, the open protocol has been a mainstay in authentication.

With OpenID and SAML, there are two open protocols for the web. Join me on Forbes to learn more about open protocols:

ActivityPub is the most exciting thing happening in social networking

There has never been a better time for an open, decentralized standard to engage in federated networks

Open protocols for the win

Can't wait to see what developments continue in this space

Update on my activity: I got working. My issue was finding a node that I could connect to, not anything missing in the Ardop protocol.

Chris Trottier does a great job here explaining how much of this revolution relates to harnessing the liberatory potential of the network effect through open protocols like ActivityPub:

The whole kerfuffle with Elon and Twitter make me even more aware of the importance of and . The open alternatives (or even clones) should be build even if the general public ignores it. But when the axe drops[1], it is very important that the alternatives are there and are reasonably mature. Otherwise the users are nothing but hostages to the axe-holder.

By building on top of existing like , we nurture the broader commons of a web.

When there are not existing Open Protocols, we weave our own with the expectation they will be insufficient and will revise as we learn and grow.

One day, there will be thousands (if not hundreds of thousands) of . Some will run Convene, others will run a different , multi-user/multi-device operating systems for digital .
