Yes! But taking this further in this case. With #Fediverse we have #OpenStandards emerging from a grassroots movement.

No #BigTech corpo's in charge having products based on the standard and able - with big $$$ - to drive the adoption in a growing ecosystem.

We lack their clout and money to drive the technology adoption lifecycle, and we organize differently. Our adoption lifecycle is different.

I think the overall trend now is toward monetization. Twitter wanted to increase their profit (epic fail), Reddit wants to gain more control over how much revenue it can get, and then here comes Spotify. You know the next thing will be Discord, Twitch, and TikTok, and finally Google will jump into the pool.

Millennials keep making fun of #OpenStandards like email and text messages add something that only old people use, not realizing that these withstand the test of time.

The film industry needs a new inter-application exchange standard. Closed solutions like XML and AAF won't cut it for much longer. New developments are needed!

We have #opentimelineio, but it seems none of the big players will adopt it or support it in any way, besides maybe some #VFX apps.

I'm far from an expert, but as a working professional, dealing with the inconsistencies of XML and AAF is always something that ends up costing more, to someone.

To build off of the current #Meta conversation, I think that overall it is a good thing that they join the #Fediverse but we, the open source users, should be quick to cut off their #Federation if they choose to behave in ways that go against #OpenSource and #openstandards principles.

If they come, contribute to the source, assist with ironing out the standards, and work as a member of the community, then I'm all for it. If they don't, we bubble them and continue like we have been.
