Looks interesting: onflapp.github.io/gs-desktop/i (via osnews.com/story/136326/a-new-)

I still want an Amiga 2.04 UI on a modern OS but I suspect I'd hate it now...

@probono @thomholwerda ok, what is missing here is what app bundles have originally back in the / days; multi platform support. It would be such a great win if it would be possible to generate an AppDir that runs on x86, ARM and Risc-V for example... :) but VERY nice to know the extraction param. Thanks!

@mos_8502 Thank you for your post! I really like and its concepts. The biggest challenge I see regarding you idea is the current state of GNUstep. It barely is the thin application layer / Yellow / Blue Box was meant to be, which later became Cocoa. Fixing it to work like intended already is a huge task. Making a desktop environment out of it (projects like or try) are even bigger ones.

Also, Mail.app has a button in the compose window called "Lip Service", with an icon of lips. When you click it, it lets you attach an audio file.

This is in every modern IM app, more or less, but someone back then thought it was a great idea too.

NeXTStep has an application called Dark Forest on the Developer CD, and it's basically a graphical DU, and it's absolutely lovely. The pictogram for "compress" is incredible, it has the recursive vertical panes view, it sorts by total size, it has a nice details panel on the right hand side displaying the file metadata.

Also the Info panel is animated. The bats fly through the moon, because why not.

I miss when computers had style.

The mid-90s, man. I first saw in action, but I was a total fanatic. What was this rip-off? Elsewhere where I worked Windows 3.1 for Workgroups was in action, we used an A/UX server, OS/2 Warp commercials ran on TV, Sun was out there, SGI was cool, and a guy I knew who worked at a pizza place talked about Linux, but I'd not seen it yet.

A little bit of history… ;-) Inspired by another thread, I was thinking about all the different operating systems I used on my boxes in the past (in alphabetical order, excluding special purpose and mobile devices): , , (my first love), , /Linux, , , , , , , , , and, of course, Microsoft .

is a desktop environment that gets as close to a genuine / environment as possible (I imagine it uses for all of this, but I'm not quite sure).

I'd love to see this on the side because I'd definitely run this on there.

And, last, but not least and winner of my developer heart: Thanks to the project for developing and providing the best application programming interface (API) for the free world! It's fun to use and hack! 💖

This page shows you how to install or in . I did this a while ago and posted about it on here, but I never got color working on it and then the VM took a dump. I'll revisit this over the weekend now that someone has gone farther ahead in this project than I have. 👍
