The Emery's Open Systems Theory embodies the world hypothesis referred to as Contextualism by Pepper, which can be encapsulated well by Heraclitus’ famous quote: “No man ever steps in the same river twice, for it's not the same river and he's not the same man.”

@marcrr @gmusser from what I've seen people are very critical of Meta's new supporting , but IMHO this kind of future is the only way the will thrive: inter-operable all the way baby

Rereading the introduction to the 1969 _Systems Thinking: Selected Readings_ Penguin paperbook surfaces some choices by the editor that I hadn't previously appreciated.

I'm fortunate to be able to attend Merrelyn Emery's probably last course in Canberra Australia and this slide shows how fundamental that theory is.

Wonder what makes a Search Conference so different from the seemingly similar Future Search? The latter claims to extend the former, but have left out core parts to make it suit a terrible individualiatic and non-systemic thinking. Here's a comparison by M Emery.

This is a new talk I did at @KanDDDinsky where I take a more of a general systems thinking angle into the Emerys' Open Systems Theory, highlighting the unique perspective it has and more details on how you create a participative democratic organization that are more adaptive in our current turbulent environment.

Curious about , especially the difference between the different schools, like , , and ?
This is good resource for that, discussed by the practitioners themselves.

Today's : arxiv.org/abs/2211.14389 by Veríssimo et. al. Authors investigate the interplay between dissipation and symmetry-protected topological order in a dissipative Spin-1 Affleck-Kennedy-Lieb-Tasaki model via tensor network techniques. For time-reversal symmetric dissipation, topological signatures remain.

"In OST, people are not limited to being purposeful but can, under certain conditions seek ideals. Ideals started to become clear when Ackoff & F. Emery (1972) discussed using organizations as instruments and choosing between purposes. People may choose outcomes which are not necessarily possible in the time available, or perhaps, ever. These outcomes are the ‘ideals’, endlessly approachable but unattainable in themselves."
—M. Emery

@davehogg said on that is a place to debate important topics.

I guess he means not fun topics? I dunno. I really hope mastodon makes it.

True like and are antithetical to . Like we used to say back in the day 'usenet treats censorship like any other outage and routes around it'. That means you can't put a big wall around it and charge people for it.

There is no center. 🌈 😂
