Earlier today, after some hunting, I found the text version of the #OPL Programming Manual that came with the Series 3a. So, while I was sitting in front of the TV this evening, I thought I'd start converting it to #AsciiDoc.

First chapter is pretty much done.

I think (hope) I've got a paper copy in a box somewhere, so I can compare it to the original.

The 7th of May 1985 is when the second generation of the #MSX standard was introduced.
As well as the #Yamaha V9938 VDP (one of the first #GPU), it defined #RS232 support, Memory Mappers for multiple MBs of #RAM, and the MSX-AUDIO #OPL FM #synth!

So, RevTran, the #Psion #OPL decompiler, is written in OPL. So I decided to try to decompile RevTran 6.4.

It worked perfectly.

yay i did it! i tweaked OPBinaryLib so that:

1. you can stream OPL3 commands instead of reading them all at once. you can even reset to the start to loop. handy for real time music players: stream some commands, send them to an OPL chip emulator to generate audio samples, submit an audio buffer

2. it can be compiled so that the file reading portion has zero reliance on the C stdlib. all you gotta do differently is provide it with a buffer to hold instrument info

AND it's still backwards compatible with the old methods

Some thoughts on the whole #OPL #openDND thing, from a non-creator:
1)Everyone who plays D&D is a stakeholder in the OPL/SRD- Third party content MAKES D&D, even if you aren't a creator.

2)There have been a LOT of creators insinuating that there are bad actors, who shouldn't be trusted- but they don't say who or why

3) There have been creators who have been outright hostile to fans who support #openDND with no explanation as to why
