Imho, this is almost invariably because of the historical baggage of how they were described originally, before a full understanding was developed.

the official of the ceremony was a longstanding Dutch statesman, Constantijn Huygens, father of Christiaan Huygens, the mathematician and astronomer and proposer of the wave theory of #light. Christiaan had worked out that sun halos are created by refraction of sun light from ice crystals in the high atmosphere.

On 7 May 1665, the sovereignty of the Principality of Orange (close to Avignon in France) was to be restored from Louis XIV of France to William II of Nassau after tense negotiations.
During the ceremony a bright halo appeared around the sun, which was interpreted by many as a sign of divine approval of the young William.
The event stirred so much commotion that it was recorded in a colour engraving
