Optiganally Yours in Hi-Fi, as I understand it, was made using the original high-quality masters from the recording sessions used to make the loops that were optically encoded on the low-fi discs used by the 1970s Mattel Optigan organ. I believe it also includes outtakes that never made it onto any discs.

I've been on an #optigan tear over at @mayor - I've been fooling around with optically decoding waveforms and such, and if this short-term obsession holds I'm going to have a go at cobbling together my own 'optophonic' device.

Anyway, I've finally gotten around to checking out Optiganally Yours' first album, 'Spotlight On: Optiganally Yours' and it's really pretty great if retro low-fi weirdness is your thing.

I suspect the days of stumbling across an Optigan in a thrift store for $30 are long gone thanks to the internet, but when browsing junk shops is a thing again I'm going to start keeping a more active eye out.

Check out this tapeop interview with Pea Hicks, who I think is pretty much the world's foremost expert on the #Optigan. A lot of really interesting details about the tech and original recording sessions.

When he put up the first Optigan web site a million years ago, the engineer who made all the original discs emailed him out of the blue... the guy had all of the master tapes in his garage, and sold them to Hicks for $1, which included the copyrights since all of that material was abandoned when the last company to own the Optigan brand folded.

There are some interesting details about the modern manufacture of Optigan discs; it sounds like a DIY inkjet transparency wouldn't cut it, at least for "high quality" sound. 🤔 (glad I'm not trying to make my own 57-track discs!)

I've been wondering if reflected light could work, or even light-through-paper, given how much brighter you can get with LEDs these days... mostly because being able to print your own low-fi optical discs on regular old paper is the lowest barrier to entry.
