🇪🇺 #ESA 📆 2023 Annual #SpaceEnvironment Report : Over 80 % 📈 of constellation #satellites 🛰️ launched in 2022 were inserted into #orbits from which they will decay towards #Earth in less than two years 📉 once they are no longer operational or if they lose propulsion. The increasing number of satellites reentering Earth’s atmosphere is therefore expected to continue in coming years. This Atlas V, with its 4 meter fairing, no solid rocket boosters, and a single #RL10 #engine on this #Centaur upper stage, is carrying a #Quasar #comsat for the National Reconnaissance Office #NRO. Quasar is believed to be the name for a network of communication #satellites that allow the NRO to maintain constant contact with its #spysats and #downlink data and #uplink tasks continuously.
The system has satellites in both #geostationary and #Molniya #orbits.

Science fiction writer, Arthur C. Clarke (of 2001: A Space Odessy fame) happens to also be the father of the Geostationary Orbit - where we put our weather satellites ... a distance and velocity that keeps them located over a point on Earth with a 24 hour orbital period.
Also - casually mentions re-usability of rockets and using solar panels for power generation ... years ahead of its time!

Then I started thinking about the sun's path across the sky and actually how it's us turning🌏 🤯
I get lunar phases🌒🌕🌔, I get seasons and solstice and I still get wowed at the whole shebang!
