In fact, it was the disciples, who were trained up by the Lord, to lead the Church from the time Jesus left, til His return.

The disciples kept God's pattern and passed on their wisdom, but only to those who truly wanted to know Him. This kept His Holy order established in the Church.

The men raised up by the disciples are known as the Early Church Fathers. Jesus calls the Church to go back to this perfect order in Revelation 2:5
