@Ruth_Mottram I cannot remember where I heard of #organicMaps before but it really saved my bacon in #Yosemite Park and many parts of California where there is just no cell service but there is GPS. Definitely incentivizes me to update #openStreetMap over Google maps which do require cell service to do routing. Developer is very irresponsive too.

Absolutely loving the fact I can use privacy-focused, open-source #OrganicMaps offline. Thanks to it, I discovered I can combine my daily walk with going further afield for shopping which doesn't involve walking alongside 2½ miles of very busy main roads. Instead, most of the route is like this...

So I've been giving #organicMaps a try and I really like it for biking and walking routes. Sadly it doesn't do so well with public transit so I'm keeping Google maps around for that.

Feels awesome to edit @openstreetmap data from within @organicmaps. Apparently you can only edit metadata like websites, opening hours, etc. of existing nodes, but that alone is really cool. It also shows immediately on e.g. https://openstreetmap.org, very rewarding!

First navigation experience with @organicmaps today was very awesome. No cell service whatsoever in this German Black Forest area, but no problem for #OrganicMaps (while #PureMaps and #GoogleMaps failed). The search for objects of interest (pharmacies, restrooms, etc.) is also very accessible!

Does routing have current traffic info or can it be made to? 🤔 That'd be the only thing making it perfect. 👌

Actually, there are interesting trees! 😀
You cannot see them in #OrganicMaps (yet maybe) but there are present in #OpenStreetMap!
It is mapped with the tag `denotation=natural_monument`

@schenklklopfer @persagen @openstreetmap my personal opinion: #Osmand is for me the first app with offline maps and navigation, very complex to use but can do everything (changing default speed for route calculation, editing pois etc). #OrganicMaps offers a smooth start into offline navigation, looks more slick and modern, but doesn't have the vast range of functions. I refuse to give Osmand up yet

Yes, scAmazon have a thing called #ESRI maps that is just as bad, given we block #technoFeudalists. Truth be told ESRI actually blocks us because we use #TorBrowser, but the feeling is mutual 😉.

Dear @smallcircles, is there an instance of this #organicMaps that is not #cloudGlare (we block cloudFlare and organicMaps.app is regrettably cf'd).

We really like #OsmAND offline #maps. It'd be great to have a comparable app for #foss desktops.

But you’ve convinced me to try #organicmaps out!

I'm no longer sure who it was on here, but some one recommended organic maps app as a privacy friendly alternative to Google maps, built on #openstreetmaps I've been trying it out the last 3 days and it is really brilliant. So 🙏 to whoever it was.
