Although he makes no mention of AI, in my own mind, I see it as entirely relevant. ChatGTP and other LLM’s fulfill the criteria for originality because they:

1. Borrow from many sources.
2. Pick and choose, then mix just those parts together.
3. Add their own spin, including what comes from the prompt.

I have an opening scene where my character declares to their husband that they think they are made of cake.
I've just realised how similar this is (in a way) to the opening of Rachel Yoder's Nightbitch - where the MC tells her partner she thinks she is turning into a dog.

I suppose some people have always tended to copy and follow fashions, and faking till you make it has a lot to be said for it, but with the internet blandness can spread to miilions of people around the world in an instant. Everything about it selects for similarity and sameness - a far cry from the democritisation of creativity that it once promised.

I genuinely worry about what has happened to notions of #creativity and #originality in the age of algorithm.

After a lengthy phone call with a friend this afternoon, in which we both bemoaned the current state of remakes and reboots, I've written a lively and provocative essay called "The Content Trap." The argument is this: EVERY artist has a finite amount of talent and imagination. Sometimes the limit is reached with a specific project that runs too long or a group of people who fail to grow. Sometimes you hit the limit over the course of a career. So what artists do you believe have fallen into the content trap? And how can we resist this assault on artistic originality?
