What a beauty. And such a unique petal structure!

These flowers (petals) are thick and fleshy to the touch.

This is a , the lilytree or Yulan magnolia, native to central and eastern China.

A little bit of info about the ;

It has been cultivated in Chinese Buddhist temple gardens since 600 AD.

Its flowers were regarded as a symbol of purity in the Tang Dynasty and were planted in the grounds of the Emperor's palace.

It is the official city flower of Shanghai.

, growing along a busy roadway here in snapped just now in the sunshine!!

As I was taking pictures, an older guy approached me and asks what it’s name is. So we looked it up on my trusty ID app and we chatted for 10 minutes about this group of beautiful plants. Bless!

It’s botanical name is and is a perennial plant of the family Iridaceae with long, rigid, sword-like green leaves.

This species is common in horticulture in its native South Africa, where it is often used in public gardens and along roadsides.

Grows well here and it’s gorgeous flowers are just breathtaking!

I believe these tightly bunched blooms are from a , aka laurustinus, laurustine or laurestine, a species of flowering plant in the family Adoxaceae.

Native to the Mediterranean region, Viburnum tinus prefers shady, moist areas. Insects pollinate this shrub, I read with interest.

The detail and complexity of the flowering masses (see close-up; first pic), are something else.

These are everywhere in this city of … flowering profusely. And they give off a sweet pungent scent that can be smelled metres away on a full-blooming shrub.

in winter here in are most definitely cheering up the landscape!

It’s botanic name is and many varieties and colours are popping up in many suburbs here atm.

Mostly observed are yellow, but these cream/yellow variety are growing with vigour in on a roadside verge.

They spout and grow from a bulb and hang about for anywhere between 6 weeks to 6 months, depending on conditions, location, soil etc I read with interest.

Interesting facts;

There are at least 25 different daffodil species and up to 13,000 hybrids.

They're the official 10th wedding anniversary flower.

Daffodils contain sap that's often poisonous to other plants.

, the heath-leaved banksia, or lantern banksia, is a woody shrub native to Australia.

It grows in two separate regions of Central and Northern New South Wales east of the Great Dividing Range.

Well known for its orange or red inflorescences, which contrast with its green fine-leaved heath-like foliage, it is a medium to large shrub that can reach 6 m (20 ft) high and wide, though is usually half that size, like this one.

It normally ‘flowers’ in autumn but this is stretching on (does so in cooler areas) into mid winter, here in Melbs.

, commonly known as the cut-leaf banksia, is a species of shrub or tree; it’s a .

It occurs in a few isolated populations on the south coast of Western Australia.

Grows well here in and they’re displaying in abundance in gardens throughout our grand city atm, during mid-winter!

The woody spiked head is a greeny -yellow colour, on this one anyways.

Many I’ve noticed present in various colours; some rustic brown, others a deep red too. Just beautiful.

The detail of the rough, woody florettes are astounding.

Notice its colour and textures of whites and pinks. It is just stunning!

I believe this variant is a , which originated in China. It is notable as an important source of edible oil (known as tea oil or camellia oil) obtained from its seeds.

Meet crossed with (Magnolia denudata × Magnolia liliiflora), the saucer magnolia or aka the tulip tree, is a hybrid flowering plant in the genus .

This was snapped this morning in .

It is a deciduous tree with large, early-blooming flowers in various shades of white, pink, and purple.

It is one of the most commonly used magnolias in horticulture and obviously grows (and flowers prolifically) well here in too!

Just lovely.

Hibiscus rosa-sinensis, known also as Chinese hibiscus, China rose, or Hawaiian hibiscus is a tropical tropical hibiscus, cultivated as an ornamental plant in the tropics and subtropics, but its native range is Vanuatu.

It isn’t tropic in atm, but it kinda is for this time of the year, early .

Just like the last few days, we’re heading for a top of 18 degrees (65F)!!

, sometimes referred to the hairpin banksia, is a woody shrub, of the genus in the family .

It’s native to eastern Australia.

Widely distributed, it is usually found in open dry forest or heathland from Victoria to northern Queensland.

These are prolific producers of nectar. Banksias in general, are a vital part of the food chain in the Australian bush. Birds, bats, rats, possums and bees rely on this wonderful food source.

These pictured are adorned with single flower spikes, say 1 centimetre long (1/2 inch) that generally contains hundreds of tightly packed spikes (flowers).

I felt the red one and the spiked section (I think it’s called an ‘axis’) is like a woody mass and the spikes are course and rigid. Not sharp.

I love the yellow ones. Just as much as the occasional red, on this group of shrubs.

More are blooming!!

The tops of these flowering structures are at least twice my height… so that’s 12+ foot (and they get up to and over 4 metres) tall.

The flowering clusters, based on my recent observations, appear to last only a week or two - at best.

But when multiple plants / trees are growing together they’re flowering at stagerred periods this month, so there’s a steady display of these things in certain parts of Melbs atm.

I’d say these ones are the late bloomers.

These ones were pictured in on this cool morning.

There’s no doubting this bountiful beauty is a .

This one is considerable in size; it’s flowering with plenty of buds in reserve, ready to bloom.

Located on a suburban corner overlooking a busy road, I’d suggest many commuters would steal a glimpse as they pass by.

Now these ARE super intriguing!

Can’t recall coming across this before.

They’re called , commonly known as balloonplant, balloon cotton-bush, bishop's balls, nailhead, or swan plant, yes - and hairy balls!

It is a species of dogbane. The plant is native to southeast Africa, and is often used as an ornamental plant.

The spikes on these balloon type growths are coarse and prickly. A little sharp. And the balloon itself is firm but giving when pressed with a little pressure. But does not rebound back. So I guess the contents is mostly hollow and not greatly ‘inflated’ as such.

This is a perennial herb traditionally used to produce ointments for the treatment of warts and the seeds are used in rituals. The leaves and stems produce milky latex that is toxic.

Gomphocarpus is nutritious food for caterpillars and some species of butterfly. 🐛🦋

Well there you go!

How intriguing.

PS - Wiki does indeed list them as hairy balls… seriously 🤭

I reckon observing this bush and its flowers from the footpath, is one of the highlights of the day.

The flowers are hearty, yet delicate in appearance and the tips (outside rim) of each flowering petal almost looks as if it’s shimmering in the morning light, as the deep purples bleed out into white.

This one appears healthy. And very happy growing in … and I bet it grabs the attention of many who walk past here, as it’s a busy thoroughfare within inner-suburban Melbs.

It’s botanic name is and is a species of flowering shrub, native from Mexico to South America and the Caribbean.

I’ve seen heaps of these flowering abundantly of late and these ones are going gang-busters here in the suburb of .

Such a simple design and anatomy, but the delicate petal infrastructure is such a delight. And they smell oh so fresh!

× , is a hybrid species of flowering plant in the honeysuckle family.

The Latin of grandiflora means "abundant flowers", apparently!

They’re delicate and lovely. Not much in the way of aroma, just a subtle sweet perfume when ‘sniffed’ up close.

Gorgeous to gork at tho!

Will flower deep into autumn!
